Counseling Home
School Counselors provide education, prevention, and intervention in academics, career, and personal/social development. Our focus is on the whole student and helping them be successful in school and in life. Counselors work with students in the classroom, in small groups, and individually to address their needs. Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, school counselors work as a team member with school staff, parents, and the community to create a caring, supportive climate, and atmosphere whereby young adolescents can achieve academic success.
Elementary Counseling
A comprehensive elementary school counselor provides education, prevention and intervention services in the areas of academic, career and social/emotional development supports. It is important to note that elementary counselors are not therapists; rather they are professional educators with a mental health perspective. They typically spend the majority of their time working on universal instruction and working with all students. The elementary counselors will work in collaboration with administration, teachers, the mental health team and parents to determine the needs of all students within each building.
Middle School Counseling
School counselors who work at the middle school level help the students in a variety of ways:
- Identification of Interests and Academic Aptitudes
- Goal Setting, Course Selections, and Academic Achievement
- Academic Interventions / Response to Intervention
- Development of Social Skills / Resistance of Peer Pressure
- Development of Decision Making and Problem Solving Skills
- Transitioning Successfully to High School
To find out who the school counselor is at your child's middle school, contact the school office.
In the Comprehensive School Counseling Curriculum adopted by the Boulder Valley Board of Education in March 2007, benchmarks of development are identified for each grade level. You can read more about those in the following excerpted pages from the curriculum document:
